What do I need to empty the tank?

I have an aquarium with a sandy substrate. I tried to use my gravel vac, but she did not choose a rubble. I held the gap slightly above the sand like JT is supposed to do. The debris trap is increased and then dropped a little. I even tried to bring the sand and does the same. Any ideas? Do I need another kind of empty? I heard of the network in the sand.
