Hi have just bought a Dolmar DT chainsaw with a 42″ bar, (no chain-brake) ?

all I know is that it is old model but no other info available to me, can anyone give me anymore info on this monster?

That size of saw is only usually used to level off stumps or cut very large chunks of tree. It’s quite common for the older monster size saws to not have a chainbrake as they are so large and difficult to wield that you normally stick against a large butt and chug away until it’s through. It isn’t as prone to “kick-back” as it is so large a bar that it will be slow to kick as the nose hardly ever gets into the timber. It is however just as lethal as its smaller brothers.

It will service in much the same way as any smaller saw but with bigger files etc, but seriously unless you’re an experienced chainsaw user you would be wise to use it as a conversation piece.

A saw in poor mechanical condition is a dangerous saw to use. Clean it, service it (or get it serviced professionally) and either learn to use it properly or if you’ve got plenty of experience, then use it only for the big dismantling stuff.

Definitely a “mine’s bigger than yours” though machine!
