The Silver Ship

Ah, see the moon in all her silvered splendour
Majestically sailing the surface of a bottomless sea.
Black the water whose depths downward do render
To my sight, twinkling creatures most curious to me.

Hovering in the bosom of a possessive mother,
Who, for eons of time coveted her children’s glow
Next her heart, no man steering from one or to another,
Except to the planets where hot and cold winds blow.

In full sail does she wander o’er a wondrous ocean,
Held to her course by a helmsman blue and round.
No vessels bar her way in disordered commotion,
Nor knotted rope measuring shallows warning sound.

Her passage can be lost in the turning of a blind eye,
No sound heard as the void caresses her curved bow.
The seasons, plotting her course where she must ply
A western horizon, her scuppers o’er flowing now.

O silver goddess of the autumn night
Who gilds below both forest floor and bough
And bathes the world in soft reflected light
We come to sing as one your praises now.

O inspiration of the poet’s mind
That finds in sleepless nights its energy
Unto your bosom all your children bind
And there sustain them with your mystery.

So oft have I, when lost and all alone
Looked skyward and been reassured once more
Because on high my lifelong love has shone
And through her magic does my hope restore.

One day, four score or more years from my birth
When all my earthly energies have fled
And I have come to be as one with earth
There’s solace knowing that we will be wed…

We’ll travel through the cosmos every night
The silver goddess and her faithful swain
And though you’ll be no longer in my sight
I will, beyond the pale be born again.
