Whats the best way to remove a brass fitting?
Im trying to remove a 1/2″ brass drain valve which is hollowed for drainage. The 9/16″head is rounded off and getting destroyed. Im not sure if i should use a torch or a hammer and chisel.
I’ve tried using a small pipe wrench and the brass just flakes off
My only option left is to break the brass fitting and hope to keep metal threads clean, or to use a torch. Im worried about busting a seal while heating the metal female part, so Im wondering if i can melt or break away old, brittle, hollow brass part.
I would try a propane torch before breaking anything. I’ve done something similar with a ball valve and kept the seals in tact by wrapping the valve with a wet rag before torching the opposite side. You’ll have to work fast because you soon hear the moisture sizzling off the rag. If you have time you may also try filing down the 9/16″ brass so as to get a metric 14 wrench on it, or maybe try a bigger vise-grip. Good luck.
