Swiss water troughs have two compartments – why?
The troughs have two compartments one large and one small. Water enters the large compartment from a standpipe or a conduit from a stream and flows through a channel cut in the dividing wall to tha smaller compartment which has an overflow device of some sort or another. Both compartments can be drained separately.
Two people said that this arrangement was to combat freezing. This is not true since if one freezes both freeze. Another said one was for washing and the orther for rinsing. This is a good answer but the troughs are not kitted out with wash boards or places to lay clothes. Also they are eveywhere, in the hills and in the streets. They look to me like they are for animals. Indeed in Gstadt ther is fine one crafted in bronze with a model cow drinking from the large compartment.
Anyone got another answer??
Maybe they don’t know what these troughs are for either, maybe it’s just a strange tradition. One thing I know is that the Swiss are strange people.
Maybe the larger side is for grain or something and the smaller side for water?
