re-finishing cabinets?

My husband and I are going to be buying our first house soon! Yay! The one we’re really leaning towards was built in 1985. The owners have put in new flooring & counter tops and taken very good care of it. It has like brown laminate cabinets though. Do you think it would be possible to paint them (possibly a quality spray paint so there are no paint brush lines)? Would they look like new cabinets? or would it look tacky? I’d also put brushed nickle knobs on the cabinets and drawers…

How would I do this?

It depends on what the laminate is made of. If it is a wood laminate then you have to remove the old finish or prepare it with something like liquid sandpaper so that the paint will have a good surface to bond to. You will also need to prime the surfaces before you paint. If you have access to a paint sprayer that would do the best looking job. If the surfaces are a plastic laminate, that is problematic but there are surface preps and primers made for that. Ask your paint supplier.
