Serious question about copper turning black in my home?
Please only answer the question with intelligent suggestions. In my rental farm house the basement copper pipes the have a layer of black on them. The silver sink faucets, etc in the bathrooms also display the same problem. The faucets and pipes can be cleaned with a cleaning solution but the black returns in a day. The person living in the house wears sterling silver jewelry and this also turns. Please help and advise me as to who to turn to for testing or help. Thanks so very much.
Maybe there are some acidic fumes in the air? Is there a bank of lead-acid batteries somewhere? Maybe some muriatic acid lying around intended for a swimming pool? Is there natural sulfur in the area? Silver blackens on its own eventually, but sulfur and humidity make it happen fast.
