Scratch removal from a copper heat sink?
even though nobody seems to answer these
I’ve got a heat sink with a copper strip and the bottoms a little scratched up.
Can I buff/sand this without hurting it?
Yes you can; it’s called “lapping”, and I’ve done it dozens of times myself on both the CPU and its heatsinks and GPU heatsinks as well. It’s quite easy; it’ll just require a variety of different “grit” sandpapers, or one if you’re patient ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9couQY4MAs ), starting off with the roughest and ending with the least, resulting in a smooth, mirror finish. One warning though: it does depend on the heatsink. Some cheaper ones aren’t pure copper/alluminum and may have nickel plating that could chip from lapping.
