Unclogging an old drain?

We finally hooked up the clawfoot tub in the home we are remodeling and the drain is SO slow that the tub would overflow before it drained if we were to use it. Are there any products out there that will unclog this drain? The house is very old and we are concerned about damaging the pipes.
