What ever happened to men’s double breasted suits?!?
OK, why has it been ever since the turn of the millenium, that double-breasted men’s suits have dipped off the fashion radar in the US?! Why do you think all those British men and European guys look 10X better dressed up? The only 2 famous people I still see rocking double breasted suits anymore are Dave Letterman and P. Diddy. I wear them exclusively because they are several degrees more stylish than the majority of single breasted suits IMO and because how they look even more dressed up than a single breasted coat. When I wear one of mine I get mad compliments and I always get treated like I am some exec. or VIP, so it can’t be argued they aren’t stylish anymore. Why do we let the rest of the world outdress us when it comes to looking sharp? I want answers.
A few general observations first: Double-breasted suits are not particularly common in Europe either. They tend look better than single breasted suits on larger men. My BF is very tall and thin, and a double-breasted jacket doesn’t look good on him. They are also a bit warmer. In Europe, there has been a trend back towards the three-piece suit, which (almost) always have a single-breasted jacket.
OK, to answer your specific question: I think it’s basically cost. A double-breasted suit requires more material than a single-breasted. Now, John Q. Public usually only wears a suit to the office because the dress code requires it, and thus he doesn’t want to spend more than necessary. So, presented with two similar suits, a DB and an SB, he sees that the SB is a bit cheaper and goes for it.
A final point: I think the main reason suits in Europe look better than US suits is the cut of the jacket. A European-cut suit tapers from the shoulders to the waist. A US-cut suit falls straight from the shoulder. The European cut looks much sharper — it fits, rather than covers, the body.
