Need help recaulking one piece shower?
My bathroom walls are sheetrock. I have a one piece fiberglass shower / bathtub assembly. I’m getting ready to paint the bathroom and removed the cracking caulk around the shower. there is almost a quarter inch gap between the top of the shower and the sheet rock. Now do I just fill that with caulk or should I spackel it to make the gap smaller then caulk. Also should I paint the room first then caulk or caulk first and paint second.
Use Bathroom grade caulk. No need to spackel as it will shrink and expand with humidity levels in the bathroom and finally crack. You may be able to find colored caulk if your wall are neutral colored. Place a single caulk bead in the 1/4″ gap and trace over it with a wet spoon or wet finger, you should get a pro finish. Painting over caulk I believe is a just a matter of personal taste. I choose not to in the event I need to replace the caulk down the road. Removing painted over caulk requires a stable hand and utility knife.
