Plumbing question, faucet is on in off position and off in on position…?

I have a kitchen faucet like this: http://www.lakewoodconferences.com/direct/dbimage/50283756/Lavatory_Faucet.jpg in my new apartment.

I have to put the handle down to turn it on and leave it up for it to be off. For some reason it drives me crazy so I was wondering if there’s anyway that I could fix it.

under the leaver, there is a ball diverter that allows water to flow from the hot supply or cold supply depending on what side you turn the leaver, or a mix of hot and cold to get warm water if you put the leaver in the center. when shut off the ball diverter is positioned to stop water flow. if down is on, and up is off, it stands to reason that the left position gives cold water and vise verse, where left should allow hot water to flow. in your case, the ball diverter has been installed backwards. first thing to do to correct this, shut off hot and cold water supply to the fixture. remove the small mounting screw on the leaver, and lift it off. depending on the model, there will be a retaining nut holding the ball diverter in place. remove that to release the diverter, and turn it half way around, and reassemble. be care full not to damage any rubber o-rings, as this will cause leaks. when replacing the retaining nut, tighten it just to the point that its a little difficult to move the ball diverter stub, when the leaver is installed , it will move normally. turn water supplies on and check for leaks. your fixture should opperate as intended now. i hope this helps you out of hot water.
