How do I handle the ignorance and possible racism at my grandmothers nursing home?
My grandmother (on my mothers side) has been in a (upscale) nursing home for about almost a year now (because of progressing dementia, and risk for falls). I go to visit her as much as I can. I am biracial. My mothers side if eastern european (polish/ukrainian) and my dads side if afro-brazilian. I take more after my dads side and have darker features…
whenever I go visit my grandmother… they always rudely question me. Even if they have seen me with my mom and her.
They stop me, give me looks and even ask me what am I doing with her…. I understand completely that it is their job to watch out for the residents safety but it’s becoming really upsetting and uncomfortable. When I even say I’m going to take my grandmother for a walk… they give me a look like they’re confused and want to stop me. They always question me and I feel like eyes are always watching me.
I have no idea how to handle this situation.??.. I feel like screaming at them “she’s my grandmother idiots”
It might be that you don’t look related to her. My ex wife had a lot of similar issues with our daughter, who looks white but her mom is filipina. Or it could be dem crazy rapin crackas, tryin ta kill yalls mom. Never trust whitey.
