building a deck with joists 16 inches on center. What do I do with extra inches?
I am building a 12×14 deck. The floor joists must be 16 inches on center. But the width of the deck is not a multiple of 16 inches. Is it ok to leave one or two that are less than 16 inches apart. Do I just need to make sure that it’s no more than 16 inches on center? The inspector already failed the deck once because it wasn’t 16 inches on center. Thanks!
Yes it is rare to find a unit that will fit exactly the 16 inch spaces. Yes make sure you are on center if using 2xs like a 2×4 or a 2×6 or what ever clip your tape measure from your starting point then every 15 1/4 inches draw a line. So your first mark will be at 15 1/4 then 31 1/4 then 47 1/4 and so on until you reach the end. Double up on your outside pieces and you pull your tape from the outside. Mark an x after your line. The x is where the 2x goes. Don’t forget to block in between the 2xs I have not given you the names of everything just trying to make it simple for you.
